OHIO DENTAL INFECTION ATTORNEY

Dental infection injury cases usually fall with two broad categories:

  1. Pre-operative infections; and

  2. Post-operative infections

Pre-Operative Dental Infections

Pre-operative dental infections are infections that are present before you receive any dental treatment.  Symptoms include pain, redness, swelling and sensitivity.  Common types of dental infections include:

  • Abscesses – infections within the tooth’s nerves or around its roots

  • Cavities – also known as tooth decay or dental caries.

  • Gingivitis – inflammation of gum tissue

  • Pericoronitis – infections of the gum tissue surrounding the tooth crown

In pre-operative dental infection cases, the areas of investigation usually focus on the dentist’s identification of the infection, recommended treatment, and management of the infection including whether or not to prescribe antibiotics.

Post-Operative Dental Infections

Infections are a known and accepted risk of any dental procedure.  With that in mind, absent evidence suggesting a failure to utilize infection control protocols during the procedure, usually post-operative dental infection cases – i.e. infections that develop after dental treatment —  focus on the dentist’s diagnosis of an infectious process and timeliness of providing appropriate treatment.   This includes failing to prescribe antibiotics when indicated or failing to properly follow-up with a patient complaining of symptoms indicative of an infection.
